Sustainable materials & production
We are grateful for the rich diversity of raw materials that nature provides us. Our production is intended to be as environmentally friendly as possible and most of our products are customized, limiting waste to the minimum. This is emphasized even more through our choice of the finest materials to ensure a product with a long life span. Casalis' design is timeless and will last for many more generations.

Linen is a sustainable material that is part of our culture. It grows here, in our Flemish countryside. Kortrijk, situated on the banks of the River Leie, is steeped in the rich history of the linen and flax industry. The art director of Casalis Anita Kars developed a rug in which the motif and the production method highlight the positive properties of linen and the negative is transformed into a positive.
VLAS combines two sustainable materials: wool and linen. Both materials complement each other perfectly as wool is voluminous with an intense color and linen has a brilliant luster. The woollen yarn is sprinkle dyed, using a combination of four shades. No two threads are the same. The tufted, springy woollen fibre pushes the linen fibre up so that it shines beautifully.
The contrast in the color and texture of the two materials is further emphasized by the Vlas motif, inspired by the typical Flemish landscape. The place where Flax (VLAS in Dutch) grows and where old dirt roads zigzag their way through the farmlands. These lines of movement and repetition are the inspiration for our VLAS Lines design.
Many of these old dirt roads were later covered with cobblestones, an iconic element of the Tour of Flanders, where cyclists shake their muscles on these roads year after year. Our cobblestones, therefore, became the starting point for our Kochie design, the follow-up to the Vlas Lines.
VLAS is available in the original color palette based on the colors of materials that are found in and around the house: wood, concrete, terracotta, plants, trees and daylight in all its aspects. Thanks to the color pom box, which includes over 40 colors, the customer can also begin work on having a customized VLAS rug made to suit their interior.
