OWNER STORY
Mixing art and design is an art in and of itself—and one that is difficult to pull off. Italian artist and designer Luciano Maria Mazzilli, in art Oçilunam, founded In-es.artdesign in 2003 to make it happen. His lighting collections radiate pure creativity with an irresistible allure, balancing an interplay of light and shadow with immaculate colour and material contrast.
Having studied esthetics, design and painting in several European cities, the artist-designer has received international recognition, both as an artist and as a lighting designer. He has participated in both individual and collective exhibitions. He has won prizes for his designs, including the Interior Design Award, the German Design Award, the Iconic Award, and the Design Plus Award from Light+Building.

The fusion between art and design
In-es.artdesign is an Italian lighting design company founded in 2003 that merges artistic sensibility with design know-how. Its products are both functional and layered, many of which evoke natural or existential phenomena, such as the waxing and waning of the moon or the passing of time.
The name in-es.artdesign is two-fold. On the one hand, it stands for both interior and exterior (i.e., In-es.artdesign produces lighting for both indoor and outdoor use). Still, the name also plays with the idea of the external world of aesthetics and beauty versus the far more intimate, instinctive and primitive world of the Freudian id (Es) says Oçilunam. When asked where the inspiration for the objects comes from, he is, in the main, equally enigmatic and compelling. “They happen by chance in the true Dadaist sense of the word,” he says. “Chance with its divine imperfections and the corrosive and smoothing intervention of time and its passing.”
Accordingly, the company's lights are at once functional and artistic, and tactile and metaphorical. A distinctive trait of the firm is the careful attention to detail and the selection of materials. Each product is made in Italy and undergoes strict quality control to ensure its excellence.
In-es.artdesign started as a new creative project in the Italian industrial scene. Art and design for interiors (in) and exteriors (es), light and shadow become one, to give shape to lamps and elements for the decoration of interiors and exteriors. Today, the company is recognized internationally in decorative illumination. Part of the production is a limited-edition series of unique pieces, in which the designer/artist transforms selected pieces from the collection with specific artistic interventions. A revolutionary concept, distant from the traditional rules of Industrial Design and from handicraft, realized through the innovative figure of the artist/ designer.
FUTURE PLANS
Preview of the CALEYDO 1 and 2 products (ø18cm and ø25cm, respectively):
The Caleydo lamp, designed and created by In-es.artdesign's in-house M&M research department, is 100% eco-sustainable, made with recycled materials from ordinary production, thus reflecting a philosophy of circularity and eco-sustainability. The unique feature of this lamp, the result of extensive empirical research into the refraction of two transparent colors, is that, depending on the ambient light, one of the two colors (internal or external) prevails—hence the name CALEYDO—capable of creating a kaleidoscopic play of emotional light.
By the end of the summer, we will be making two more sizes of this product (CALEYDO 3 and 4: ø35cm and ø50cm) and other color combinations, and we will also be producing three or four more products from the same eco-friendly collection.
